Paintings require intensive preparatory graphic work in order to ultimately achieve the perfection an artist strives for.
It is not uncommon for many different versions of a painting to exist—being modified, corrected, and expanded until, at the end of this process, a small, near-perfect graphic work emerges that contains almost all the elements of the final painting.
